I would go for (E).

I feel the answer shall be A because:

In E, It says that cannon (cannon is subject) has proved something
In A, It says that cannon shooting the dead chickens (this whole noun phrase is subject) has proved something.

Please let me know if you have different opinions.

I think E is correct

Helps in something is the correct idiom, helps to do something is not. And Glory I have my doubts if A is correct because "cannon shooting the dead chickens" the whole noun phrase is the subject, it looks like its as incorrect as making the cannon the subject , as in A. Had the statement said that the experiment or the act etc has proved it would have been correct. What I basically mean to say that "Cannon has proved something" is incorrect and "Cannon shooting something has proved something" are both incorrect, technically speaking.
