845. The utility company has announced that it will permanently close its Unit I nuclear power plant, the first plant that had been built by private industry and the model for a generation of modern nuclear reactors.
(A) that had been built by private industry and
(B) built by private industry and which was
(C) to be built by private industry and which was
(D) built by private industry and
(E) to have been built by private industry and was

Can you please explain why the answer is d and not e? (I don't like e but d also sucks because 'built by private industry' is a participial phrase and 'the model for a generation of modern nuclear reactors' is an appositive. Where's the parallelism?)

gter,

I feel your pain. Remember, GMAT Verbal, unlike GMAT Math, is about selecting the best of five options rather than a provably "correct" answer. Choice E is obviously incorrect due to the lack of parallelism with the verb tenses and the unnecessary was. Choice D, the best answer, is arguably parallel, as the Unit I plant was:
1. the first plant built by private industry
2. the model for a generation of modern nuclear reactors

Hi, Dan.

Isn't it true that choice D would create a compound adjective modifying power plant, while choice E would create a run-on sentence with a clause preceded by comma and then followed by an adjective ? Correct me if I understand well. Thanks
