620 (M44/V31)

by krishnavepakomma Fri May 17, 2013 1:42 pm

I took Gmat in Jan, this year and scored 590 (M47/V25) after around 3 months of preparation. So, I studied for naother 4 months and took the exam again only to a score a pathetic 620.I am working mother(1yr baby) and having a very hard time preparing for the exam. Can anyone advice me if this score is good enough to apply for the universities. I am actually to retake the exam as I know my Math score is bad this time. But I am not sure if taking GMAT for the third time and improve by just few points (I might be able reach 650 mark max if i write again)will make me less preferable by universities .(you know, took 3 times and still scored just 650).Please advice if its better to apply with this score or re-take the exam and give a try.

Thanks.

Hi there,

Sorry to hear about your struggles, but I congratulate you for your determination and hard work, especially during your first year as a mother.

You could go either way with this decision, but if you were willing to prepare just a little bit more, you could consider re-taking one last time in the next 6-8 weeks max (as opposed to dragging it out longer). Some people find, especially when they've studied for quite some time, that a final push with a slightly shorter-term deadline really helps them amp up for the exam, as opposed to starting a 3-4 month prep program again, when you are already fairly familiar with many of the concepts on the exam. Plus the test does have a margin of error or standard deviation, so you could take the test again tomorrow and potentially score 20-30 points higher just based on the variations or your own mental state that day, etc. I would stick with 2-3 times, and do know that admissions committees take your highest score. Depending on the schools you are interested in, a 650 is definitely a nice benchmark, if feasible. Be sure to take at least 1-2 (or more) additional full-length practice exams in the lead up to your final test if you choose to go for it, and study from those exams, what you got wrong etc, really learn from them.

Good luck to you!
