I think the answer should be A.

A most nicely states the author's main point. Throughout the argument, the author tries to say that indebtedness did not cause the recent recession (see the last statement...real cause must be elsewhere).

definitely (a). this one is such a home run that i didn't even read through the rest of the answer choices.

the stated conclusion of the argument is "the real cause must lie elsewhere".
this "cause" refers to the preceding statement, "high household debt levels could have been the cause of the recession..." (i.e., if certain things had been true).

combining these two statements, we can rephrase the conclusion as "the real cause OF THE RECESSION must lie elsewhere THAN IN HIGH HOUSEHOLD DEBT LEVELS". this is exactly what is stated in choice (a).

by the way, why are you labeling all these problems as "780+"?
these aren't even gmat problems - much less gmat problems for which you know the difficulty level. please don't post statistics that you make up yourself; thanks.
