Ron already explained why "that" is incorrect. Please read the entire thread..

on similar grounds as above , why is it unambiguous in the below underlined part of the sentence

A collection of 38 poems by Phillis Wheatley, a slave, was published in the 1770’s, the first book by a Black woman and it was only the second published by an American woman.

is it here not correctly referring to the book ?

HI Ron,

C) says that "and It is believed to have been the largest flying creature the world has ever seen."...

My understanding is that the right answer should be: "and It is believed to be the largest flying creature the world has ever seen."
because it is still the largest flying creature.

OR

Please tell me the diffrence in between these two:

1) It is believed to have been the largest flying creature the world has ever seen
2) It is believed to be the largest flying creature the world has ever seen

The creature went extinct 65,000,000 years ago. Hence "...to have been", rather than "to be".

Here's the correspondence:
It is xxx --> It is believed to be xxxx
It was xxx --> It is believed to have been xxxx

"Is" is clearly inappropriate here"”the animal ceased to exist tens of millions of years ago"”so "believed to be" is likewise inappropriate.

For a similar problem"”most likely the problem on which this one is based"”check out #76 in the 13th edition OG.

Hi Ron,

A small question on the original question posted in the thread.

In option c, which is the correct answer, "and" joins two independent clauses. Is it not incorrect to do so, unless we use words like therefore (to show a link between the two sentences) or to list out many items (where we look for parallelism).

Thanks

Hmm?
Twenty soldiers were injured(,) and five civilian bystanders were injured.
—> This sentence is fine. You seem to be suggesting that it's wrong (unless it falls under your category of "listing things").

Nope, connecting 2 complete sentences with "and" is fine.

Disclaimer:
I don't know terminology, so I had to google "independent clause" to answer your question.
From a brief search, my understanding is that "independent clause" is smart-people-talk for "complete sentence". If this is wrong, then my comments are irrelevant.

Oh, and, 1000SC has been banned on here for a couple of years now. It's a terrible source, with lots and lots of very serious issues. You should not use it.

Because it's a banned source, this thread is now locked.
