A Perfect Pattern to study SC

by neilsheth13 Wed May 08, 2013 4:55 am

I have just started practicing SC and also have bought the MGMAT SC but it becomes difficult to actually apply the topics which are given in the book. I am a non native so have also finished with the foundations of verbal I have made the flashcards too but still.

Is there a definitive pattern to study SC just as the MGMAT Math in which you read the topic and then do that particular type of sums from the OG? I mean if I use this pattern I wont get to know all the grammar given right?

Pls Help

That's a great question, neilsheth. You've hit the nail on the head with SC- it's tricky because you can't just learn a topic and then expect to get those questions wrong. Sentence Correction is about being able to eliminate bad answer choices, but in order to eliminate 4 bad answer choices, you often need to know 2-3 different topics. The first thing I'd tell you is to not be discouraged when you get a question wrong, but recognize it as an opportunity to recognize an idiom or some other topic that you hadn't been able to recognize previously.

That said, it's going to be immensely frustrating when you study Pronouns and can't find any Pronoun problems in the Official Guide to practice on. We do break these down in our full syllabus as well as on our online Archer tool, but you could probably do a Google search to look for problems in a specific topic, or even go to the back of the Official Guide and search for problems that are related to the topic you are looking for. Remember when you start out, you're not looking to find 1 correct answer, but to eliminate the answer choices that have an error on the topic you are studying. After you study more and more topics, you should (hopefully) be able to eliminate more and more bad answer choices in the problems you see.

Thank you so much for a great answer

Any suggestions in how to remember the rules and not make the same mistakes again ?
Does note making work here ?
Or should I make flash cards?
frankly I tried making them but still I'm finding that I can't apply the same rules in og questions. I feel I don't know anything so I refer back to the mgmat sc book again.
I have read the book twice now.

Pls guide me in remembering the rules .

What do you mean by making the rules again?

Flash cards work well for some people, and other methods work well for other people. If you need help improving your memory, you need to find the approach that works best for you. Try a few different things and see what helps, or think back to what has worked well for you in the past when you've had to remember things. Surely the GMAT isn't the first experience in your life when you've been called on to remember material you've studied. :)
