A question about verb form (Hypothetical subjunctive mood)

by KathyL227 Fri Jun 03, 2016 8:50 am

Hi Ron/Stacey,

A question about subjunctive mood:

in Manhattan text book, there is a sentence:
If the contractor has signed the contract, he will deliver the goods. ("sign the contract" happened some time in the past, the author is at least neutral about "he will deliver the goods" will happen. )
If the contractor signs the contract, he will deliver the goods. ("sign the contract" will happen in the future, the author is at least neutral about "he will deliver the goods" will happen. )

how about:
If the contractor has signed the contract, he would deliver the goods. ("sign the contract" happened some time in the past, the author is at least neutral about "he deliver the goods" happened or not. )

Thank you for your help.

no, those forms aren't used with "if".
"if X, then Y" is used to make a definitive statement about what will happen (Y) if X happens.
