A statement picked up from NYtimes

by ashru.net Tue Sep 04, 2012 1:02 am

I came across the following statement from NYT
---------------
Four years after being bought by an Indian company, the well-known but somewhat faded British brands are regaining some of their lost luster, racking up big sales from Shanghai to London.
---------------

what is "racking up big sales from Shanghai to London." modifying?Isn't it a dangling modifier?
This part should be preceded by either "is"(to indicate who is racking up big sales) or "by"(to indicate how are the bands regaining).

I understand similar constructions that start with "including", "using" etc. But, this one appears to be different.
Any explanation would be deeply appreciated..

IMO "racking up big sales from Shanghai to London" is okay and is modifying correctly HOW faded British brands are regaining some of their lost luster.

this is a standard "comma + ____ing" modifier. as the poster above correctly remarks, it describes the entire action of the preceding clause.

if you are not familiar with such modifiers, check out the modifiers chapter of the MGMAT SC guide.
