Nice job, guest! Option C changes the subject of the sentence incorrectly.

I still don't get this one.

The original sentence says, "A substance derived from the Madagascar periwinkle...is cultivated in China." The information after the comma is an appositive and just describes the subject.

Answer "E" says that the Mad periwinkle is cultivated in China. Doesn't that change the meaning of the sentence? Why isn't the original sentence correct?

the original sentence, if interpreted literally, contains two absurdities.
1: the substance is cultivated in china. this doesn't make sense, because it's the plant itself that must be 'cultivated'.
2: the periwinkle itself has proved useful in decreasing mortality (as required by the pronoun 'which', which modifies the noun immediately preceding the comma). this is also an absurdity (if it's the periwinkle itself that does this, then what does the substance do?).
