About Infinitives

by ysyanshi Sun Feb 07, 2016 8:31 pm

Hi Student Helper,

In chapter 12 of Manhattan SC 6 edition, I got two examples about the usage of infinitives.

1) The building WAS DEMOLISHED to avoid falling down accidentally. [Incorrect]
2) The building WAS DEMOLISHED to keep it from falling do accidentally. [Correct]

Here I understand it makes no sense that a building cannot avoid something, but I don't understand why a building can keep something intentionally, so that sentence 2) is correct.

Thank you.
