About 'such that' and 'such as to'

by 3doubler Mon May 26, 2014 10:10 am

Dear sir or ma'am,

I have a question about 'such.. that' and 'such.. as to'
As I was informed, 'such.. as to' is a converted version of 'such.. that'. However, I don't understand how this conversion is made.
Please see the below example.

Eating spoiled pizza caused such an indigestion as to make me not be able to sleep.

I wonder which below sentences are same with the above.

Eating spoiled pizza caused such an indigestion that eating makes me not be able to sleep.

Eating spoiled pizza caused such an indigestion that the indigestion makes me not be able to sleep.

Dear sir,

I made this sentence by myself to understand the concept.
Thanks.

The meaning of this sentence is "My indigestion was so bad that, now, eating anything at all will keep me awake." (The blue part discusses just "eating""”i.e., eating in general.)

I changed "not be able" to "unable", since that's the way it would appear in good writing.

Eating spoiled pizza caused such an indigestion that the indigestion makes me not be able to sleep.[/b]

This sentence is redundant.

The point of "such a(n) _____" is to emphasize the "_____", so that there's no need to mention it again"”the entire sentence is already about the "____".

MUCH MORE IMPORTANTLY...
If there is no obvious relevance to the GMAT, then this forum isn't the right place.

Remember"”the things NOT tested on the GMAT vastly outnumber the things tested on it. So, you should try to have some GMAT material"”preferably created by GMAC"”as the basis for future questions on this forum.

If you're new here, read through the posts. Even though this is the genreal verbal folder, you'll notice that most of the posts"”including just about all of the posts that generate good discussion"”have as a basis some sort of GMAT-specific material.
