Action noun vs Simple verb (MGMAT-SC)

by rohitowe99 Fri May 17, 2013 10:16 am

MGMAT-SC Chapter11, Problem Set-8

Correct answer in book-
The weight of the carbon emissions from cars is higher in summer than in winter.

We can see that this sentence uses an action noun (weight) and a generic verb (is). I thought the above usage was less preferred to a simple verb usage such as-

The carbon emissions from cars weigh more in summer than in winter.

Please explain.

Thanks!

"Weight" is not an action noun; it's like "size" or "height" or "diameter" or ... anything else like that.

There's no action noun for "to weigh", other than just "the weighing..."
so, if you had a sentence in which you actually wanted an action noun for "weigh", then that's how you would have to write it.
e.g.
The weighing of boxers before a title bout has become a public spectacle.

Thanks a lot Ron. I got your point.
I also wanted to know that which of the following sentences will get a priority in GMAT:

(A)The weight of the carbon emissions from cars is higher in summer than in winter.

(B)The carbon emissions from cars weigh more in summer than in winter.

I'm not sure there would be a preference on the GMAT's side here. Regardless, since both are correct grammatically, don't spend time looking at a split like this on the GMAT, instead spend time searching for more important splits.
