Additional VICS Problem Set 4th Edition pg 195 Q7

by saurabhbanerjeeiimk Sun Jun 03, 2012 11:16 pm

Question reads as " X percent of Y percent of Z is decreased by Y percent.

I was trying to solve the question algebraically, however was stuck. While I did review the pick number technique, I wanted to know how to solve it algebraically.

X percent of Y percent of Z

becomes

X/100 * Y/100 * Z

remember, "percent" means "divided by 100" and "of" means "times"

now if something is decreased by Y%, you take the original and subtract Y% of the original. in other words, multiply by 1 - Y/100. this gives:

XYZ/10000 * (1-Y/100)
