Thanks in advance for the help. Just wanted to see how well I am positioned for applying to B-schools at the moment.

Undergrad:
Well regarded private school

3.2 overall. (I should note that I had a 3.6 in core business classes and got only A's and B's my junior and senior year. I did not really get serious about school until then)
Weak grades in math classes (taken my freshman and sophomore years) but straight A's in finance, advanced accounting quantitative methods and management classes.

Varsity Athlete, All-Conference Academic team
Active in volunteering through local Mensa group

710 GMAT
45v, 42q

Work experience:
1 year general sales rep for major mutual fund company
2 years Financial Advisor for international investment bank
Series 7, 63, and 65 certifications

Generally perform extremely well in interviews and on essays.
Target schools:

Yale SOM
Cornell Johnson SOM
NYU Stern (Part time)
Vanderbilt Owen
UNC Flagler

Hi,

Thanks for sharing your info. It sounds like you would have a chance at admission at the schools you listed, with Yale and Cornell being the more challenging of the list.

Your GMAT puts you right at the average level or slightly above at the schools on your list. Your GPA is a weakness but you could explain what you listed here in the application and it does help some.

The question will become, what experiences have you gained in your 3 years of work experience that you will bring to the classroom. And what are your goals-- why is the MBA necessary. It's important to really explain how your past leads to the MBA which leads to your future career goals. Since you may be somewhat 'average' in the applicant pool, you may be compared more to others-- so those who are able to stand out in their application in some way, with stories and anecdotes and who make a compelling case for this MBA and this school, will have better chances at acceptance.

Please let us know what other q's we can answer! Good luck!
