Advice needed

by boxer317 Fri Feb 08, 2013 3:25 pm

Hello,

My profile is as follows:

>> Nationality - Indian
>> GMAT score - 710
>> Work exp - 30 months (current)
>> Working in a software MNC
>> Have some volunteering exp. in local schools
>> Organised couple of big events in college.

I am targeting full time MBA courses beginning in 2014.
I wanted to know, what all B-schools I should target in USA (considering the profile I have).
I want to get into consultancy after the MBA degree.
Please suggest.

Hello,

Thanks for sharing. Are you on the technical (software development) side of your company or on the business side? I'm assuming that you are an engineer based on your profile, but please correct me if I'm wrong as it might change my evaluation:

It's difficult for me to suggest specific programs that you should apply to, as it is a very personal decision and there are hundreds of programs to choose from. I can tell you that as an Indian Male engineer without robust extracurricular/community leadership experience, the odds of getting into a top 10 or top 20 program are somewhat slim. Therefore, I'd suggest that you focus your efforts on mid tier programs - Tepper, Cornell, Fischer, BU, etc. Again, you'll have to research the programs specifically to see which are the best fits.

Best of luck,
Mili

Hello Mili

Thanks for your evaluation, I really appreciate it and yes, you guessed it right, I am an engineer involved in software development.

When you say top 20 or mid tier programs, which mba program ranking or comparison method do you use.

Secondly, What do you think about MBA courses in Australia (AGSM and Melbourne Business School) and Germany (Mannheim Business school). I am thinking of applying to these schools because they seem to offer good job prospects after course completion and are cheaper as compared to USA programs ( data taken from Financial times rankings).

Also what do you think is the major difference between a two year course and a one year course.

Please share your views.
Thanks

Hello,

Great questions.

1. I am speaking generally, not specifically towards any particular ranking. But if you look at the rankings - e.g., US News and World Report, Business Week, etc., you'll see that the schools don't typically shift dramatically between rankings. For international rankings, the case is probably a bit different.

2. There is nothing wrong with those programs or those countries :) I would say Manheim has a stronger international reputation, but neither is very renowned globally. I can't speak towards the Australian schools too much in terms of post-grad employment records, but I would think Germany would be a great place especially if you are interested in the auto industry. Sounds like you've done your homework - you should just research the programs and see if they seem like good fits for YOU. My opinion on the programs probably shouldn't factor into where you go, as I have no idea what you are looking for :) All I can say is that these programs are not well-known in U.S., but that may be irrelevant if you have no intention of living/working here!

3. One year courses are generally better for people who are not looking to make a career switch. Since you don't typically have an internship opportunity in a one year program, it's harder to show that you've gained exposure/experience in a new field. Two year programs offer more time/space to get involved in school activities, try out different things, take on a solid internship, etc.

Hope that helps,
Mili
