After the Arab conquest of Egypt in A.D. 640

by sinhavis Fri May 15, 2009 11:29 pm

After the Arab conquest of Egypt in A.D. 640, Arabic became the dominant language of the Egyptians, replacing older languages and writing systems.

(A) became the dominant language of the Egyptians, replacing older languages
(B) became the dominant language of the Egyptians, replacing languages that were older
(C) becomes the dominant language of the Egyptians and it replaced older languages
(D) becomes the dominant language of the Egyptians and it replaced languages that were older
(E) becomes the dominant language of the Egyptians, having replaced languages that were older

Internet SC quiz

OA is A
Why "becomes" is wrong here and "became is correct". Also why replacing is prefered over it replaced as in D

Please read (and follow!) the forum guidelines.

"Internet SC quiz" is not an acceptable source. We have to post sources because of copyright laws - that means we actually have to list the author of the problem, not just the website where the problem was found. That would be similar to citing "To be or not to be, that is the question" as authored by "my local public library." I haven't actually credited the author. :)

If you can determine the author (company or person's name), then please feel free to post and we will answer the question (assuming the source is not on the banned list).
