All The Quant: Chapter 9 Question 8

by SpencerW706 Wed Aug 19, 2020 10:14 am

Hi,

I am trying to solve question #8 in "All the Quant", chapter 9. The DS question asks the below equation. I'm struggling to find why the answer is A when simplifying the equation to A = xy/6, yet statement one is xy = 8. Any help would be appreciated.

If A = (x/3)/(2/y), what is A?

1) xy=8
2) x/y=2

Your first step is good. You simplified the question to be "what is xy/6?". The missing piece of the puzzle is "xy". If we knew xy, then we could find xy/6, so then we'd know A. Statement 1 gives us this missing piece.

Follow it up yourself and use Statement 1 to actually answer the question. Find out what A is. Of course, in a test, being fast is important, and you'll learn to see connections in DS problems, so that actually calculating the answer isn't necessary. However, in your review work, finding the answer to the question in a DS problem can be useful for clarity.
