All the Verbal, page 124

by yo4561 Mon Dec 14, 2020 11:12 pm

On page 124, the following sentence reads.
"The company WILL REIMBURSE YOU when you HAVE SUBMITTED your expense report". This is given as an example of present perfect form. Would it be incorrect to say "The company will reimburse you when you submit your expense report"? It may just be me filling in the logical gap, but would it be wrong in that the tenses are the same in my example? Thank you for your help in advance.

There is a meaning difference.

The company WILL REIMBURSE YOU when you HAVE SUBMITTED your expense report. = Once it is true that your report has been submitted, the company will reimburse you.
The company will reimburse you when you SUBMIT your expense report. = You turn in your expense report and the company will reimburse you on the spot.

If I were writing this sentence, I'd probably change "when" to "once" to further reinforce the meaning of the first sentence above, but that's just a quibble.
