And vs Or

by rahul.chd7 Thu Mar 31, 2011 3:10 pm

Hi Guys,

I am currently facing an issue regarding the usage of and.
My understanding is that "and" is to be used when the two clauses being joined by the and are unrelated.

Eg It was raining today and I am late for work.
Copied from Thursday's with Ron session :)

But while going through a problem in OG 12 , I came up with an explanation where "and" was used in the explanation to discard the use of "or" , when both the clauses being compared.

I know OG is a banned source , hence not pasting the solution but for reference i am talkin about Diagnostic 44 , option D (explanation)

Just wanted to know if my understanding of and is correct.
For eg is it valid to say
The Manhattan bridge was seldom more than 100 feet wide or 120 feet deep and it ran 1 mile on the east cost.
or
The Manhattan bridge was seldom more than 100 feet wide and 120 feet deep and it ran 1 mile on the east cost.

this is more a question of meaning than anything else. there is no universal rule for whether to use "and" or "or"; rather, you need to consider how each is used in context. does this address your question, or have i misunderstood what you are asking?
