In this question,what makes E a better option over D?

Does "so high as" in E play a vital role?I was thinkinking "so high as" when replaced by "high enough" makes
the sentence simpler and more concise..

Same thing here - the idea is to emphasize the extreme quality of category 5 'canes, not to imply that they are just good enough to do the damage described.
