Any Difference between these two sentences??

by shrikantbhaiya Fri Dec 03, 2010 7:15 am

Dear Instructor,

Is there any difference between following two sentences if Yes then what is that and which one is correct.
I am confused. I don't think there is any difference.

1] Accountants, like lawyers and physicians, regard the overt pursuit of new business as inappropriate professional behavior.
2] Accountants,as do lawyers and physicians, regard the overt pursuit of new business as inappropriate professional behavior.

Thanks & Regards,
Shrikant

Hi, I am pretty new to this blog, but clearly the out of the two sentences the first one is correct.
Like is used to compare people, objects etc.
As is used to compare actions.
Also while comparing we need to compare similar things.
For example in the sentence you have highlighted we need to compare "Accountants", so automatically we need to use "Like".
Also Accountants can't be compared to actions of lawyers and other...
Hence the second statement is wrong.
Hope the explanation makes sense.

Cheers!!

Shrikant, please see my other post about the ineffectiveness of bumping your own posts just to tell us you are "expecting" answers..

The difference of course is obvious - one sentence says "like" and the other says "as do". :) I assume you meant to ask whether one or both is wrong. THIS IS IMPORTANT! You should not be trying to figure out which sentence is correct; you should instead look for mistakes. In this case, the "as" indicates that two clauses are being compared - "accountants regard" as "do lawyers and physicians". The problem is that the intervening clause splits the words "accountants" and "lawyers". This problem does not occur in the "like" example, because we are just comparing "accountants" to "lawyers and physicians" with a "like" in between them..
