as a result vs. resulting

by nash.avi Sun May 10, 2009 10:10 pm

Hi,

I framed the following question myself to understand the difference between "as a result" and "resulting"

the relative price of gasoline has been increasing since 2001, resulting in the national patrol program now costing 2 million dollars

or

the relative price of gasoline has been increasing since 2001, and as a result the national patrol program now costs 2 million dollars

Which one is correct and please explain why.

Thanks in advance

They're both correct, though the first might be preferred.

An -ing form after a comma often indicates the RESULT of the preceding clause. ", resulting" is even more explicit in this regard: we are clearly told that the second program stemmed from the earlier clause.

We can also say ", and as a result ..." However, this form is a bit wordier.
