AS.....AS and parallelism

by at.ouchen Thu Feb 20, 2014 12:32 pm

Good day
Just like for some parallelism markers such as:either A or B,neither A nor B,not so much A as B......., I'm trying to establish some rules for the AS....AS Expression something like the inside outside rule, but I'm getting lost
in the Manhattan SC idiom section we have the following expression
Cheese is AS GREAT AS people say.
We have AS MANY apples AS need to be cooked.
We have THREE TIMES AS MANY pears AS you.
We have ten apples, ABOUT AS MANY AS we picked yesterday.
His knowledge springs AS MUCH from experience AS from schooling.
Any hint will be highly appreciated
Thanks!!!!!!

Not sure what you mean by "the inside outside rule".

In any case, this is mostly just an example of parallelism"”as you pointed out yourself, here"”and so the normal principles of parallelism apply.

If you have more specific questions, inspired by actual problems, please post them in the appropriate folders here. Otherwise, "look for parallel structures" is the key advice here.

Good day Ron and thanks for your reply
The issue I'm raising here is: how to deal with comparaison (how to know it's correct) in the presence of ellipsis.

The examples I've listed present this particularity, for a non native speaker (such my case) I could have said : this structure isn't parallel while it should be , whereas it is, (the ellipsis phenemona)

I'm just asking for some strategies, red flag that can ease my pain.
Many thanks in advance

I'm not familiar with the term "ellipsis".

In general, you should be able to find parallel structures in comparisons.
Things will mostly be easier if you do the following:
* Find the second of the two parallel parts first (= the one that follows the signal word(s))
* From context, determine what words should appear as the first part of the comparison, in order to create parallelism with the second part.
* Look for those words.

Again, this is an impracticably general question for a forum post; i.e., "Tell me how comparisons work" is not something that can reasonably be discussed in the space of a single forum thread.
If there are specific examples that are giving you trouble, then by all means go ahead and post threads about them on the forum.
