could you post the whole question with the multiple choices ?

seems its comparing two actions

A) The book was banned in the US
B) Two subsequent books were banned in the US

So in this case equals = banned in the US.

correct.

notice that no SC problem will ever contain two sentences, so you really don't have to worry about what should happen if there's a period in the middle. (however, a semicolon performs essentially the same function, so you will want to know what's acceptable there, as well.)

if you replace the comma with a semicolon, then (b) is the way to go.
