AS....SO

by at.ouchen Thu Apr 03, 2014 10:21 am

Good day,
in the idiom section we have this sentence:
AS you practice, So Shall you play
Just As you practice, So shall you play

My understanding of this structure is: any time I meet with it, I should automatically invert the subject and verb in the second clause after SO

But then I meet by some sentences such as
Just as Congress is the legislative branch of the Federal government of the United States, so the parliament is blablabla

Are the two structures correct?
thanks!!!!

You don't have to invert the subject and verb. In most cases, in fact, you won't invert them.

The inversion accomplishes nothing at all from a grammatical standpoint; the grammar is unchanged. It's purely there for poetic, rhetorical, and/or stylistic reasons"”none of which will ever be tested on the GMAT.
(Also, the inversion is limted to extremely short subjects, such as "you". With a longer subject"”even one that's not that much longer, e.g., "the parliament""”the sentence gets unreadable pretty quickly.)

What is "the idiom section"?

If you're referring to something in the MGMAT strategy guide, then your question belongs in the MGMAT non-CAT folder, not here.

If you're referring to another source, we need a citation. (I shouldn't have answered your question without one, but I don't feel like deleting my post.)

Thanks.
