Aviation officials

by vivekcall81 Sun Sep 27, 2009 12:46 am

Aviation officials have not only failed to determine the cause of the crash, but they have also ignored demands by the pilots union that the investigation should be expedited.
(A) crash, but they have also ignored demands by the pilots union that the investigation should be expedited
(B) crash but also ignored demands by the pilots union that the investigation be expedited
(C) crash but have ignored demands for expediting the investigation by the pilots’ union
(D) crash, but they are also ignoring the pilots’ union’s demands to expedite the investigation
(E) crash: the demands by the pilots’ union that the investigation should be expedited have also been ignored
OA-B
please explain what makes A wrong answer choice.

Two reasons:
1) should or must is not required with bossy verbs such as demand, dictate, propose, request, mandate etc. The message is already conveyed by these bossy verbs so should and must would be redundant and hence incorrect.
2) in not only....but also .... construction....you cannot have anything in between but and also. Further, words following not only and but also have to be parallel. In option B, ignored (simple past verb)is parallel to failed(simple past verb).

Hope this helps.

the easiest way to eliminate (a) is by faulty parallelism.

namely:
you can have not only ... but ... or not only ... but also ...
choice (a) can't be processed as the second of these, since "but" and "also" are not next to each other. therefore, we have to treat it as not only ... but ...

after "not only" we find failed to...
after "but" we find they have also ignored...

these aren't parallel, so (a) is gone.

Hi Ron,

Although i myself chosed B because it follows the parallel construction but have one confusion. 'that' in B seems to refer to pilot union because whenever that is used without a comma then it refers to the noun just before that.

Correct me if i m wrong.

Thanks,
Parul.

oh, no, this is a different kind of "that".

this usage of "that" is more like the usage in my brother said that he was going to be late, or the announcement that my brother was going to be late took me by surprise.
in this usage, i actually have no idea of the formal grammatical category in which "that" would be classified (relative pronoun, etc.).
