So it's C vs D.
Both OPENERS are fine ('According to...' and '...indicate that...'), so that split is a red herring. The problem with C, though, is the last part of the answer choice: 'that they used to dress.' All this means FOR SURE is that the robe was just a tool that the women used in the process of dressing the statue (maybe they used it to zip up the back of the statue's dress...??). Choice D, on the other hand, correctly conveys the idea that the women actually put the dress ON the statue.
How's that?[/quote]

I do no catch the difference in meaning between "robe that they used to dress " and "robe with which they dressed".
For me, the only difference is that the former means that there is only one specific robe to dress the statue....but I do not see anything related with "put the dress ON the statue"
Am I correct?

if you dress X with Y, that means that you put Y onto X. more generally, if someone/something is the direct object of "dress", then clothing/items are being put ON that someone/something.
for instance, parents have to dress their babies (with clothing/etc).

"with which they dressed" is better than "that they used to dress".
the former indicates 100% that they actually put the robe ON the statue.
the latter just indicates that they used the robe, in some way, in the process of dressing the statue (but that they didn't necessarily put the robe on the statue - they just used it in some way).

yep. good find.

the right-hand part of the parallel construction is "...and THAT y", which creates the expectation of "THAT x" in the left-hand part of the sentence.

furthermore, the two parts actually have to be parallel ideas -- i.e., the ideas contained in the two parallel constructions have to represent the same type of thing/notion/idea, presented in the same way.
note that this idea is important for elimination -- there are choices such as (c), which do contain "that x" and "that y", but in which the ideas represented by "x" and "y" are not parallel.
in choice (c) in particular, "that x" describes a characteristic of the robe itself, while "that y" describes a fact gleaned from ancient athenian records. that doesn't make sense, so (c) is NONparallel even though you see the word "that" two times.
by contrast, in the correct choice (d), "that x" and "that y" are both facts gleaned from ancient athenian records. so that choice is properly parallel.

We do have one more split here.

Choices B) and D) uses Past Perfect tense that is not needed in the sentence.

Hence, Choices B) and D) can be discarded.

Comments please.

(b) yes ... but (d) hmm?
the past perfect doesn't appear anywhere in choice (d) -- and, much more importantly, (d) is the correct answer, so you obviously can't discard it.

Yes, then in that case, correct!

Hi Instructors ,

By using the same parallelism logic of .. Indicate that ..... and that this robe

i think i can eliminate Choice A ) , right ?

Are there any other ways of eliminating choice A ) ?

Moreover , can we do a 3 -2 split on the basis of idiom indicate that ?

actually, you can eliminate all 4 incorrect answers on the basis of this parallelism.

Are there any other ways of eliminating choice A ) ?

did you read the thread?

if you read the thread, you'll find that the answer to this question is already on it.
"based on" is incorrect. also, "that they used to dress" is inferior to "with which they dressed".

Moreover , can we do a 3 -2 split on the basis of idiom indicate that ?

no. you'll get lucky with that here, but it will get you in trouble elsewhere.
