Basic Grammar Problem.

by ramendra.awesome Thu Mar 06, 2014 4:09 pm

Dear Instructor,

Could you please help me understand what is wrong with the below sentence:

A) I may go to Washington and also meet the president.
B) I may go to Washington and meet the president.

According to the explanation at viewtopic.php?f=29&t=481&view=next#bottom
(A) should be clearly wrong. But I politely beg to differ. Please help. Thanks!

The hyperlink given by me says in explanation of option A, that Because of its placement in the sentence, "aid" is a noun in this case. I think aid could be noun here but it could be 'verb' as well. Both can be true, so because of ambiguity option A could be wrong, not because it is grammatically incorrect.

Hope, I would get reply to my question, cause I am talking about a pretty old thread. Thank you in advance!

You can't write "aid for..." if "aid" is a verb. That's only idiomatic if "aid" is a noun.

Luckily, you won't have to worry about idioms like that one, since the current version of the GMAT will only test extremely common idioms (e.g., "more ... than" rather than "more ... as", or "between ... and" rather than "between ... or").

The use of "also" is unnecessary in the problem above, but it's not actually an error.
If you see a decision point like that, then it's not actually a decision point; it's a distraction. Try to find what it's distracting you from.

We need this.

Thanks.
