Re: Because there are provisions.....

by chetan86 Sat Mar 08, 2014 4:08 am

Hello Moderaors,

I correctly marked option B as answer, but have one doubt regarding option A.
A is given as :
Because there are provisions of the new maritime code that provide that even tiny islets ...

I know this answer is wrong but want to know whether there is any issue with the usage of 2 THATs in this sentence?

In OG13 SC-50 using 2 THATs and it is the correct sentence.

One more question.
Can we use they/them/their for inanimate objects?

Regards,
Chetan

That sort of repetition is not an error, but good writers generally try to avoid it. As a result, GMAC's correct answers will try to avoid it as well.
If you have no other way to elmiinate choices, you could use it as a guessing method.

If you want to read more about this, check out this link (and the other links within it):

What else would you possibly use?

(One question mark is enough; thanks.)

Hi Ron,

Thanks a lot for your reply.

Just want to confirm that
here 1st 'THAT' is infact wrong, if it is referring to 'new maritime code' then it should have verb as 'provides' not 'provide'.

Let me know if my understanding is wrong.

I have removed one question mark from my original post. :-)
Regarding my question about usage, I got what I wanted to know from your question. Many thank!!!
I have sent you a PM on beatthegmat. Please ignore it as that message is asking about the same thing.

Sorry I did not specify the option.
I wanted to confirm for original sentence/option A.

In that choice, "that" refers to "provisions", and so is fine.
("That" can't logically refer to the entire maritime code; if it does, then "There are provisions" appears for absolutely no reason at all.)

Hi,

Can someone please explain why "they" in A is wrong. The description in the OG states that "they" refers to "there" in first part of the sentence.

If "they" is the pronoun, shouldn't the antecedent be "fisheries and oil fields"?

As I type this out, I'm realizing that I might not understand the meaning of the question. Please correct me but here is how I interpret it "Because there are certain clauses in the code, tiny islands can be claimed by fisheries and oil because, they(fisheries) have already stimulated disputes". Is this wrong?

Yeah. The point of the sentence is that the code itself has led to disputes. (People are arguing about the code, not about the fisheries.)

Let me help you answer your own question. "they" is a plural pronoun and thus is replacing a plural noun in the sentence. You should be able to take that noun and replace the "they" with it, and everything should make logical sense.

Look at the plural nouns in the sentence. Which one could I take and replace the "they" with, and have the sentence make sense?

Thank you,it's very kind of you.
In choice C, pronoun"they" refers "tiny islets",because"there" is not a noun. While the sentence does't make sense, because the subject should be" the new maritime code".
Is it right??

"They" appears nowhere in choice C.
