Can 6.0 in AWA help offset a low verbal score?

by himanshubari Mon Oct 26, 2009 3:52 pm

Hello,
I am planning on applying for Part time MBA programs.
UC Berkley
UC Davis
U Santa Clara
UCLA Anderson.

My GMAT is 710 with 37V and 49Q. I got a 6.0 in my AWA and was surprised by a low verbal score. Does a good verbal score ofset a low verbal score? .

Sorry for bundling questions together but also wanted to know -
When applying to part time programs, is it imperative to get a recommendation from my current supervisor?.. ..

Hi -

What was the percentile for your verbal score? In most cases, a strong AWA score doesn't truly offset a low verbal score, but it certainly doesn't hurt! Given that the AWA section is graded by a computer, it doesn't tend to be a huge focus point for the AdCom. Solid undergraduate records or professional experience that demonstrates solid communication/comprehensive skills serve as better mitigating factors.

As it relates to your question about recommenders for a part-time app...generally speaking it is important to have support from your current employer for a part-time program as schools want to be sure that (1) you will be able to handle balancing work/academic demands and (2) your employer is on board. If there is a particular reason why you do not want to or cannot ask your current supervisor then you could address this in an optional essay, but this would not be the first choice of action.

Best,
Erin
