1. Jim washed the bedroom, and he cleaned the window
Correct, but wordy because of the redundant "he."

2. Jim washed the bedroom and he cleaned the window
Incorrect - It is unclear what the and should join or group together. From the way this sentence is written, the reader would expect to find another thing that Jim washed following the and. For example, "Jim washed the bedroom and the car" makes sense because the car and bedroom are two objects that can be washed. Instead, this sentence means to discuss two actions Jim took so we must use the ", and" construction if we want to join together two full independent clauses. The comma in 1 makes it clear that we're joining together two independent clauses that discuss what Jim did.

3. Jim washed the bedroom, and cleaned the window
Incorrect - the portion of the sentence after the ", and" should be an independent clause. You have created a comma splice here because the second portion of the sentence can't stand alone.

4. Jim washed the bedroom and cleaned the window
Correct - and joins together two things Jim did. A comma before the and is not required because we are not joining together two independent clauses.

"comma+and",not "and" is used to connect 2 independent clauses.
question 137 og 13 shows this point.

in other cases, we use "and" not "comma+and" .

is it christally clear?

unless the comma in front of the "and" is left over from a modifying phrase set off by commas, or is indicative of a list of three or more things, or just necessary in order to make the sentence make more sense. comma-"and" has several uses, but the ONLY use of "and" without a comma is to join exactly two parallel elements that are not independent clauses..

Dear instructors,

You mean that comma and is used to join two independent clause not two things.

what is the difference between Jim washed the bedroom and cleaned the window and Jim washed the bedroom ,and he cleaned the window

Well, the difference is that they use different words. :) There is no relevant difference in meaning, and neither is incorrect.

Dear instructor,

Although the restaurant company has recently added many new restaurants across the country and its sales have increased dramatically, its sales at restaurants open for more than a year have declined.

Does this prep question violate the 'rule' that the only use of "and" without a comma is to join exactly two parallel elements that are not independent clauses? The underlined part is the OA. It seems to me that the "and" has been applied to join two independent clauses 1)the restaurant company has recently added many new restaurants across the country;2)its sales have increased dramatically.

Thanks,
tim

These are not independent clauses. They are both inside the "although" clause, which itself is a dependent clause.
