comma+ING Modifier

by yuxi19900219 Thu Jul 26, 2012 6:21 am

[deleted because problem is from a banned source - see below]

OA:E
OG explains B: Earning is close to the records, not to Jacqueline Cochran, making this sentence hard to process.
That is to say, earning seems to modify records.
As for me, earning can be regarded as an action happenning simutaneously with' held' in the main clause, so it is right.
Am I wrong ?

OG is a banned source; it is illegal to post OG questions anywhere on the web. If you are in one of our classes, please ask OG questions during office hours or before/after class..

"earning" follows a comma, so it is not a noun modifier at all. instead, it is an adverbial modifier..

Hello GMAT Instructors,
post1738.html?sid=8efdd5d04c594591613f93ee1f3685f7#p1738

If we have a Construction of type (as in Option B in the above link) :-
VerbED Modifier, VerbING Modifier, Clause -> Why does Stacey say that VerbING Modifier will modify the preceding Noun in the VerbED Modifier rather than Subject of the succeeding clause? Can u please clarify?

Thanks
Vijay

she says it because it's true! :) this is how sentence construction works. if it is not obvious just by reading the sentence that this is the case, this may be one of those rules you just need to memorize..
