"comma+with..." vs. causality

by wangyinwei_2005 Mon Dec 03, 2012 3:51 am

Hi, dear instructors:
Can I use "comma+with..." to express causaltiy?
here is a example, 'With charcoal’s being replaced by coal as the fuel used in the smelting of iron ore and several improvements in blowing machinery, the average output of ironwork tripled over the eighteenth century.'
if not, what meaning does "comma+ with" want to express?

Thank you!

I can't find COMMA+WITH (,with) construction in your sentence. BTW, I believe your example is right. 'With' is a preposition and 'with' has different meaning in different sentences.

Here is says,

With something....., something else happened.
I Can. I Will.

Hi ,wily thank you for your reply!
But per your example, can I translalte it to 'when somthing..., somthing else happened at the same time? ' it does not need to represent causation. in my opinion, this sentence is more likely to represent two things happen together.
Am I overlook something here?

wangyinwei_2005, I think you are right and I don't think the time period is important here i.e. things can happen at separate time frame.
I Can. I Will.

Good discussion. wangyinwei_2005, your reasoning is correct. "with" introduces an adverbial clause that tells us why something happened (modifies the verb in the main clause). Acceptable construction.

With everything packed, I am now ready to go on vacation. (why am I now ready? b/c everything is packed)

Notice how the time frame of each event don't have to be synced as long as the modifier describes why the event will occur (at whatever time that will happen)

With 60% of the vote, John will be elected the next president.
