comparison hits again

A general question from comparison problem set MG sentence correction.

Original :The tycoon contributed more to candidates's campaign than anyone else in industry

solution :The tycoon contributed more to candidates's campaign than did anyone else in industry

confusion: The tycoon contributed more to candidates's campaign than anyone else in industry did.

Are both solution and confusion correct or "did" ( as in this particular sentence ) needs to follow than?

I can partially see that the comparision is of action so "did" should come right after "than". And if nouns are compared "did" comes at the end.

There is one more on similar lines. 6, 8 page 101

The placement of the word "did" does not matter, though it is more commonly used as it is in the "solution" here. The confusion on this problem is one of meaning: did the tycoon contribute more to this campaign than he did to another campaign? Or do we mean to say that this tycoon contributed more to the campaign than did anyone else?
