Comparison question.

by usmanqd Tue Jan 01, 2013 8:23 pm

China exported just under $400 billion in goods in 2000, twenty percent more than India did and nearly twice as much as Russia’s exports.

A) Same
B) India’s and nearly double what the Russian exports were
C) India exported and nearly twice as much as the Russians did
D) What India did and nearly twice as much as Russia’s exports
E) What India exported and nearly double the Russian exports

This question is a modified from of an an original older GMAC question. The right answer is C. Can someone please explain how D is wrong?

Don’t we need to have "China exported twenty percent more than what India exported"?

The sentence talks about exports in dollars and so "what" is not appropriate since 'what' cannot be applied to amounts. That takes out D and E.

B: Subject of the sentence is China and so 'India's' will refer to China which is not correct. Besides, 'nearly double' is not a comparison. 'nearly double of/than' would have been more appropriate. But 'twice as much as' is preferred to 'double of' when comparing.

C stands out correct.
