Confusing conclusion? CR

by devinderpsingh Wed Jul 08, 2009 3:25 pm

Hi,
I'm confused about conclusion of below type of question:

We should adopt policy for enforcing X. It will boost student's confidence. Thus, it will result in better marks and quality of the education.

In this what's the conclusion, "We should adopt..." or "It will result in better..."?

Thanks

I think the conclusion here is "Enforcing X by adopting policy Y results in better marks and quality"

I think that is too generalized.

I think two options for conclusion are:
a. We should adopt the policy
b. policy will result in better marks and ...

Hi Devinder,

Can you type the entire argument? It's difficult to determine a statement is a premise or conclusion without context.

If you have two claims that you are confused by, the Therefore Test is often helpful.

Which makes more sense: X therefore Y, or Y therefore X?

"We should adopt policy for enforcing X" therefore "It will result in better marks and quality of education"

OR

"It will result in better marks and quality of education" therefore "we should adopt policy for enforcing X"

It seems to me that the second makes more sense, so "We should adopt policy for enforcing X", in my opinion, should be the conclusion. Again, without the rest of the argument, it's not easy to tell.
