CR Doubts (OG-11, Q#76 & #77)

by supratim7 Thu Sep 19, 2013 2:42 pm

Got some doubts on following CR questions. Not sure of my rephrase/unpacking..

OG-11, CR, Q#76 & 77

Q# 76 Sharon's argument is structured to lead to which of the following as a conclusion?

Here the question is asking us to pin-point the conclusion of the argument as a whole (Though 90% of the people know someone who is unemployed, unemployment is NOT abnormally high), not the conclusion of Sharon's argument, right??

Q# 77. Sharon’s argument relies on the assumption that

Here the question is asking us to pin-point the assumption underlying the conclusion of Sharon's argument (If a person knows approx 50 workers, 1 or more will very likely be unemployed), not the conclusion of the argument as a whole, right??

Thank you.

I don't understand the distinction between the blue things; perhaps you can explain.

Roland has an argument; his point is, essentially, "This statistic is alarming".
Sharon has an argument; her point is, basically, "No, Roland, you're wrong; this statistic is unremarkable."

The passage consists of 2 arguments. One argument (Sharon's) is a response to the other (Roland's), but the passage as a whole is not a larger "argument". It's two arguments interacting with each other.

This totally answers my question.
Thank you so much Ron.
