Critical Reasoning Patterns

by NMencia09 Thu Mar 01, 2012 12:07 pm

Hi all,

Regarding CR questions, is it possible to map out the patterns of correct/incorrect answers, and then look for those again on the test? In other words, is there a quantifiable number of patterns that the GmAT uses (or favorites that it has) that should be memorized and searched for on test day?

i.e. cause&effect, incorrect time line, etc.?

Also, for RC: Are there words that the GMAT uses in the answer choices/questions that should be memorized?

I.e. I came across a question in which it used the word 'immutable' to examine the relationship between two Countries. This is a word I didn't understand, and hence I got the question wrong. I understood the idea of the question, but not knowing that word made all the difference.

Is there a list somewhere to find words that might be a bit more challenging that the GMAT often uses?

Thanks!

As long as you have a decent vocabulary, you will not need to memorize words for the GMAT. If you have trouble with vocabulary, you should definitely work on that, but there is no GMAT-specific list to study from..

It is generally a good idea to incorporate pattern recognition into your study of verbal questions and answers, although this should not replace any other part of your studying. Pay particular attention to what traps the GMAT uses on its wrong answers, as these are often repeated on other questions..
