Difference between "To do" and "For doing"

by info123talk Thu Sep 05, 2013 6:37 am

Hi,

Ann and jane formed a committee to resolve the contentious issue.

Ann and Jane formed a committee for resolving the contentious issue.

Could you explain which one of these two statement is correct and why?

In the case you've posted here, you'd want "to resolve". It's an idiomatic usage thing.

This post was obviously inspired by a GMAT problem from somewhere -- i.e., you didn't make it up at random -- so please post the problem that inspired it. Also, per the forum rules, please cite the source.
If it's an OG problem, just name the edition (11th, 12th, 13th) and the problem number; you can't post those here.

Thanks.

Thanks.

This is not the exact problem but a part of problem in some SC questions. Have observed this in MGMAT SC book & few other materials as well.

If you have a specific problem to quote, that might help to make the discussion more specific. If not, then, well, it's an idiom thing.

Thank you Ron.

Found something similar in OG12.

In OG12 Page 43 qstn 48-
Why For manipulating and for fulfilling is correct? None of the options have To...

This question does not seem to follow this idiom.

The issue is that this idiom only applies to one very particular context -- namely, the use of "to + verb" to indicate the purpose of an action.
It really is annoyingly specific. If you're talking about the purpose of a thing (like "a tool"), not an action, then it's perfectly possible for "for + verbING" to be correct, as it is in the examples you've cited.

More generally, there are plenty of other correct uses for "for + verbING". If you have OG12, check out SC problems #6, #40, #44, and #107, among others.

Most importantly, consider idioms LAST. Look at everything else first.
In the problem you've cited, the issue is straightforward to resolve by means of parallelism, so "idiom" should not even be considered.
