difference btwn "by both" and "both by"

by dw6586 Mon Sep 24, 2012 3:34 pm

unlike the commercial crafts of many other countries, those of thailand are influenced by both ancient beliefs and tradition and have remained relatively unchanged over the years.

what is the difference in this sentence if the term both by is used instead of by both?

and is there a difference btwn the two terms if the sentence stopped after "tradition" (taking away the last "and ..." part)

(sentence from GMATprep)

Personally, I think by both and both by are not interchangeable in this sentence.
Coz if you put both by here, then the sentence should be rewritten to be:
unlike the commercial crafts of many other countries, those of thailand are influenced both by ancient beliefs and (by) tradition and have remained relatively unchanged over the years.

Plus, I don't think there would be any difference without the sentence "and have remained relatively unchanged over the years".

if u use 'both by' then it is also correct but the second 'by' is required before 'tradition' so that parallelism does not break.
so the statement will be:
unlike the commercial crafts of many other countries, those of thailand are influenced both by ancient beliefs and by tradition and have remained relatively unchanged over the years.

indeed. not only does the meaning change, but saying "both by" requires a second "by" after the "and"..
