Disallowed construction

by djaytg Wed Jan 30, 2013 9:42 am

I was going through the forum when i found a Ron' explanation for "because constructions"

Here are the quotes

" incidentally, you can knock out all of (a), (b), and (c) for the same reason: the disallowed construction "because of NOUN VERBing". "

" you cannot write "proof of ... fields ... posing". this kind of construction is just wrong. "
FROM

I did not follow either of them, especially the second one

Can anyone please explain?

The connection between those two examples is the word "of", which is a preposition. Remember rule #1 of prepositional phrases- PP can't include a verb. That's the error made in both those examples. You can modify this by eliminating the of OR making the -ing word into a definite noun:

Because of running, I was tired. (no)
Because I ran, I was tired. (fine)
Because of the running, I was tired. (ok- the running is now a gerund (noun), but this definitely isn't the way you'd see things written; unfortunately, off the top of my head, I can't think of a better example)
