Doubts: Pronoun and Tenses

by asax Sun Jul 22, 2012 8:16 am

Pronoun:
Can a Sentence have two pronouns, if it not ambiguous?

Although the coordination of monetary policy can help facilitate the orderly financing of existing imbalances, its effect on their size is not likely to be significant in the absence of an appropriate fiscal adjustment.

Please explain wrt above sentence.

Tense:
Future Tense, how do you differentiate between singular and plural words.

City Planners in Detroit hope that the renewal project extending along the eastern riverfront will establish a population that lives as well as works downtown and also provide the office space needed to attract new businesses.

I will do this tomorrow.
They will do this tomorrow.

Just by looking at will do, we can't say subject is plural or singular right? So, in this case, how do we say, will establish and provide are parallel?

Yes, two pronouns appear quite often in sentences, and there is nothing inherently wrong with that as a possibility..

For future tense, you've noticed that the verb conjugates the same way for singular and plural subjects, so you won't know just from the verb whether the subject must be singular or plural. In your example, "will establish" and "provide" are not the things that are parallel. "establish" is parallel to "provide", and the "will" applies to both of them..

Thanks for the clarification Tim :)

I found it in GMATClub forum.. seems like its from 1000Sc. Not sure.

Although the coordination of monetary policy can help facilitate the orderly financing of existing imbalances, it is unlikely that its effect on their size is significant in the absence of an appropriate fiscal adjustment.
(A) it is unlikely that its effect on their size is significant
(B) it is unlikely that the size of their effect would be significant
(C) affecting their sizes are not likely to be significant
(D) the significance of their effect on its size is unlikely
(E) its effect on their size is not likely to be significant

yeah, be careful about using any questions from sources other than us or the GMAT itself; sometimes there's something a little off about the questions..
