"Everyone"

by abhishek.gupta Thu Mar 07, 2013 9:22 am

Manhattan Sentence Correction Guide, Chapter 2 , Pg 23.

Wrong: Does everyone have their book?
Right: Does everyone have his or her book?

I understand that "everyone" is singular and therefore "their" should be replace by "his or her".

However I believe with the same reasoning, "have" in the WRONG sentence should be replaced by "has".

Right: Does everyone has his or her book?
Is my understanding correct? If not kindly explain.

no, that's wrong, because the verb here is does have, not just have. when you have a helping verb, only the helping verb undergoes these changes.

if this particular construction (= writing the sentence as a question) is what's causing you trouble, by the way, then you can ignore it -- the SC sentences are always going to be statements, not questions.
