evidence provides support for the classification of?

by AmandaS355 Mon Sep 22, 2014 12:26 am

New genetic evidence—together with recent studies of elephants’ skeletons, tusks, and other anatomical features—provide compelling support for classifying Africa’s forest elephants and its savanna elephants as separate species.

A. provide compelling support for classifying
B. provide compelling support for the classification of
C. provides compelling support to the classification of
D. provides compelling support for classifying
E. provides compelling support to classify

the answer is D.
A,B are wrong, "provide" should be singular
and I know the difference between D & E:
"to do" emphasizes the purpose of the action,
while "for doing" emphasizes the use of sth.

BUT I don't understand why C is wrong?
"provides support to the classification of"

Per the forum rules, please cite the original source of the problem.

If the source is GMAT Prep (FREE software only) or MGMAT materials, this is the wrong folder. In that case, please do the following:

* Search the forum to see whether there are any existing threads on the problem.
(For GMAT Prep problems in particular, it's almost certain that there will already be a thread.)

* If there's an existing thread, DO NOT post a new thread. Read the existing thread, and then post any remaining questions on the existing thread.

* If you don't find any existing threads, please start a new thread in the appropriate folder.

* Finally, please read the rules for how to write the title of the thread. (I.e., not like this one.)

Thanks.
