Hello Instructors,

Would it be possible for you to explain #45 from yellow OG(11).
I hope this is not against the forum guidelines...

I somehow cant understand the use of the past perfect ..

As per my understanding, we need to consider the following 2 actions in sequence:
1. fear in people earlier in the year that there may be a recession
2. avoidance of the recession later in the year because of gains in the stock market

In order to express the two actions, use of 'had feared' and 'avoid' is necessary. Hope this clarifies.

Thanks, viksnme, for trying to explain. Guest660, thanks for not posting the text of the question. The frustrating thing is that, legally, we are technically allowed to discuss OG questions but we can't post the text of the questions themselves. And it's pretty much impossible to discuss a question if we can't use the text! As such, we've decided that we won't even try to discuss OG questions because we think it would end up being more confusing than helpful.

There is one good thing, though: we have kept up the archives of questions that were posted and discussed before GMAC asked us not to discuss these anymore. So you can do a search to look for this problem (this one is in the archives); perhaps the prior discussion will help to answer your question.
