From >700 to my practice test to 650 the GMAT day. Retake ?

by syrnig Thu Apr 19, 2012 9:08 am

Very bad experience for the test day. After having performed well at all the tests (cf below), the test day arrived and my score went below my worst nightmare.

I'm looking forward for any advice / help about what to do. Retake in the next days ? Retake in the next weeks ? I am leaving for work in roughly 3 weeks and I won't be able to pass the test again for a few months due to work constraints. Should i stop completely for a longuer period ?

- My appointment was scheduled at 9.30. The test center opened at 9.25 (the students who had the test at 9.15 were even more nervous!)
- AWA went well with classical subjects
- My pen did not work anymore after 20 minutes of quant, I then started to make silly mistakes for 2 or 3 questions. The second pen did not work much better but at least I could use it
- I thought the verbal went right until I saw my final score
- The tricks given in the "Thursdays with Ron" concerning the timing helped me to finish with 1 minute of margin for each part

Finally got a dispointing 650 Q47V32.

My scores were :

GMATprep1 740 Q50V41 (re- taken 2 days bfore the test, some questions were the same as the first time)
MGMAT6 730 Q50 V39 (taken 3 days before the test)
MGMAT5 700 Q45 V40 (taken 4 days before the test)
MGMAT4 680 Q46 V37 (taken one month before the test)
GMATprep2 700 (I do not have the splits anymore) - (taken 3 weeks before the test)
GMATprep1 640 - taken some months ago.

Thank you for your help

Hi,
I had the similar bad experience yesterday. I have been studying for last 3 months and started at 670 level (GMAT diagnostic). I started with Kaplan guide and then moved onto Manhattan Set of 8 guides. I completed all books and then started Official Guide. I alaso compelted course in SC from e-gmat.com

Here is my progress for tests that I took:

1. GMATprep1 (In March) 680
2. MGMAT 1 - (On Mar 18) - Completed only verbal as I selected a wrong time option for quant section - Q 36 81%
3. MGMAT2 (On Mar 26 ) - 700 Q47 V39
4. MGMAT3 (On April 1) - 680 Q47 V35
5. MGMAT4 (On April 5) - 700 Q46 V39
6. MGMAT5 (On April 8) - 720 Q48 V40
7. MGMAT6 (On April 15) - 730 Q48 V42
8. GMAT PREP2 (On April 16) - 730 Q47 V42

Actual GMAT - 650 Q47 V32

I'm looking forward for any advice / help about what to do. Any other course that I can take to improve Verbal score.

Thanks.

Do you feel you encountered timing issues? Was the test more difficult than what you practiced with? Sometimes it's stress...

Stress ? Yes of course as everyone. But can it cause up to 50 points of difference ?

The other issue I have now is the incoming new GMAT. Should I retake now or should I wait some months the time to train myself for the new gmat ?

If you're not stressed in practice exams, but you were very stressed in the GMAT, then yes. It's a lot easier to play golf when no one is watching and it doesn't count. When you play in a tournament, those 5 foot putts can be tough.

As for the new exam, that depends how you feel.

hi guys ,
I had the exact similar experience.I took my test on May 26 2012.
But my scores were
quans:47
verbal :33
But my aggregate was only 650.I guess it should have been 660.I answered the last question in verbal but did not have time to confirm.Does this explain the drop in the aggregate ?.
My mock scores
gmatprep1:640
manhattan test 1 :680
manhanttan test 2 :690
gmat prep 2 :690(2 days before the test)
I am applying for the MIS (management in information systems ) program in b-schools.I will have three experience in deloitte consulting.Should I retake my GMAT ?given i have 45-50 days to start the rest of my application process?
