General question about demonstrative pronouns

by pappup5 Sun Jan 17, 2016 2:39 am

Hi Experts,

Can you please help me out ?

I read the following in the Verbal Strategy guide :-

Wrong: Her company is outperforming THOSE OF her competitors.
Right: Her company is outperforming THE COMPANIES OF her competitors.

My question - Does the GMAT accept the following version?
Her company is outperforming her competitors' COMPANIES.

On a similar note is the following acceptable :-

Compared with south India's more complex languages , North India's seem not too complex.

May I know which Verbal Strategy guide you are using? I read somewhere else on the forums that any verbal material aside from OGs are rather questionable and one should not place too much emphasis on them

Sure - I am referring Manhattan GMAT Sentence Correction Guide 8 [Ch 5 - P 70], hence the question on this forum. I have never found exceptions to the material in this book thus far and the questions I have posted are merely my own doubts.

your alternative versions are fine.

the problem with the original is that the plural pronoun ("those") can't stand for a singular noun ("company"). your versions remove that issue just as well as the book versions do.

Wrong: Her company is outperforming THOSE OF her competitors.
Right: Her company is outperforming THE COMPANIES OF her competitors.

Her company is outperforming THAT OF her competitor-->also correct, now. right?
Her company is outperforming THAT OF her competitors--> incorrect, competitors don't go with That( all competitors can't have single company)
however,

Her companies are outperforming THOSE OF her competitors--> correct
Her companies are outperforming THOSE OF her competitor--> also correct ( note no s)
Her companies are outperforming THAT OF her competitor--> incorrect

Ron, can you validate the examples above?
Is my analysis correct?
Thank you so much,
Have a great weekend

almost right, but, your second example could be fine, too -- there's certainly no reason why multiple people couldn't own a single company.
