GMAT Average, Median and 80 % Range scores for b-schools.

by gettoalok Fri Dec 11, 2009 5:10 pm

Hi,

Most b-schools post the GMAT Average, Median and 80 % Range scores on their websites. It gives a rough estimate of the gmat score that the b-school expects any candidate (applying to that particular b-school) to possess.

For example, a b-school posts the average score as 650, median as 660 and 80% range as 620 to 710.
Now I come to my questions :
If I have a gmat score of 600,
1> Is it too ambitious to apply to such a school?
2> Should I look only for those schools where my gmat score (600) falls in the 80% range?
3> What are my chances of getting an admit from a b-school such as the one mentioned in the example?

Hi,

First I would like to post a disclaimer- I am neither a GMAT instructor nor an admissions counselor. Much like you, I am a potential B-school aspirant. That being said, I can state, based on what my B-school friends have told me, the GMAT is only one element of the overall application (it does hold greater weight if you are applying to a US school from a country outside the US). Since you have scored 600 (below the 10th percentile for the school), I would say don't be disheartened. However, you will need to bring something to the school that is vaulable. Maybe you have high undergraduate grades or well above average work (progressive) experience or remarkable extracurricular activities or stellar references from people who might matter to the school or...Also, it depends on which schools you are planning to pursue.

You can check the schools that fit your particular profile best by going to US World B-Schools rankings. You might have to subscribe to the online publications for access to detailed rankings. The site will allow you to develop a sense of where you stand vs. the average candidate at a particular school.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for your reply cyber_office.

I'm targetting only mid range universities at the moment (b-schools that are ranked between 30 to 50 on the usnews website).

Yes, I'm aware that gmat is only a part of the application, though a very important part : )

Schools that have the gmat 80 % Range scores at the 630 - 720 level, typically require candidates whose gmat score fall in that category. They have also stated explicitly on their websites that the gmat score is a valuable indicator of the candidates academic capability.

Of course, I'm focused on preparing the best possible essays and also relying on good recommendation letters from my superiors. I have good academic credentials and notable extra curricular activites.

Hopefully, something good will come out of all this.

You should apply. You have a very good shot at the schools you are applying to. My cousin sister with 3 years of experience, a CPA, and GMAT of 670 was accepted into Yale in 2007 (at the time it was ranked no. 14; today it is no. 10 according US News) !!!

Hi, I'm happy to weigh in on this discussion, with a slightly different perspective.

GMAT is only one element of the picture as you know, and there are certainly cases where applicants with extremely low GMAT scores being accepted. But those cases are rare, and the applicant would need to be stellar in every other area, particularly academic in order to offset the admissions committee's concerns about the GPA. The committee would also expect to see the optional essay discussing (not apologizing for or excusing) the low GMAT and would want to understand why the applicant couldn't re-take the GMAT for a higher score.

The 80% range is a very good guide. Yes, 10% of the class is below, but a) you don't know how much below and b) if you're applying to schools with an 80% range that does not include yours, you're making the battle that much more uphill. Not impossible, but if your goal is to be in school next year, you may want to add a couple of schools to the list where your GMAT won't be a negative differentiator.

I hope that helps.
