GMAT Foundations of Math (FoM) Question

by Nathanys Wed Feb 01, 2017 8:22 pm

I've signed up for the full live course. In the FoM book on page 29, the lower section of the page explains the principle of distributing the Square Root among the terms in the parenthesis. My question related to the problem => SqRt 2 (1 - x * SqRt 2). Here, when we distribute the outer SqRt 2 into the terms inside the bracket, specifically with "-x*SqRt 2", why don't we multiply the outer SqRt 2 separately with "-x" and "SqRt 2"?

i may not be understanding the question completely... but, it seems this is just an issue with distributing multiplication in general.

for instance, if you multiply out x(2 – yz), that's 2x – xyz.
do you understand that?
(i.e., you don't multiply x by y, and then AGAIN by z)

if you understand that example, then, this is the same principle.
