you seem to be implying that gmac shouldn't test "this kind of question".
i'm curious-- why not?
this problem is (in my opinion) more of a "practical real-life problem" than most of the other quant problems, so i see it as a welcome addition to the exam.

also, the quant section is designed to include a substantial number of questions that aren't purely "math concept" questions.

this is the point of the section-- it's not only (or even primarily) a math test; it's a test of general problem-solving skill and flexibility.

if the quant section were more of a pure "math test", then it would have no reason to exist in the first place, since everyone already has math grades on college transcripts.
